’90 and Still Gorgeous

It’s not everyday we are blessed with a request to prepare a High Tea for a ‘young’ lady’s 90th Birthday! The Windsor Hotel in Hermanus was kind enough to allow us to use their dining hall to celebrate this special occasion. The weather was perfect, clear skies against the lapping waves, and the whales were breaching within view of the venue.
As most of the family were travelling though from Cape Town, we ensured there was plenty to eat and drink at this event, whilst our young hostess charmed guests with her angelic voice. An insistence from ‘Ouma Tonnie’ was her favourite cake from Charlies Bakery in Cape Town. The savouries and sweets were made by Anli van Vuuren of Hermanus and adorned the table decorated with antique teacups filled with limited edition Strawberry Lindt Balls, marshmallows and occasional organza/feather flowers and pearls softened the edges. Ouma’s tea was served from an antique pink rose Prince Albert tea-set carefully transported in, with gold teaspoons to match. Marshmallow milkshakes were provided to the ‘little people’ who couldn’t believe the sweet fare in front of them. Various cake stands in single and multiple tier housed the feast.
A photo of ‘Ouma’ during the war wrapped around a fragrant candle greeted guests on the gift table as they entered the room and pink bubbly was served. What makes you think ‘Ouma’ loves pink? Many a happy tear was shed.
